The Power Source

Years ago when I attended a small Baptist church, we would always sing a song that stated: “we got the power in the name of Jesus.” When I was singing that song, I never realized how this song was biblically incorrect. Of course I did a lot of things wrong for years in ignorance before the Holy Spirit “re-educated” me. I now know we do have power in the name of Jesus, but that is only enough power to have our names written in the Lamb’s book of life so we can enter the kingdom of God. How do I know?

  • But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)
  • Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

If invoking the name of Jesus provided power, then anyone could have this power just by using his name. One group tried this, and it cost them dearly:

  • Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. (Acts 19:13-17)

These people saw the Apostle Paul doing signs and wonders in the name of Jesus. They thought, as some wrongly assumed that the name provided his power, but these seven sons found out the hard way this assumption was incorrect. Paul invoked the name, but he had a different power source. Here is where the power lies for every Christian:

  • But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)

Are you born again but lack power to do the work of God? Then you need the Baptism of the Holy Spirit:

  • And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)

This is what gave the Apostle Paul his power:

  • And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 9:17)
