Who is the Holy Spirit?

Many describe him as an “it” which portrays him as a thing. He is, however, a person that can think, speak, be grieved, teach, et al. Here is what the Bible has to say about this person known as the Holy Spirit or the Holy Ghost:

  • And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30 KJV)
  • For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. (Luke 12:12 KJV)
  • But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26 KJV)
  • As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (Acts 13:2 KJV)

He is also the third member of the godhead. Here is what the Bible has to say about this third member of the godhead:

  • And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (Genesis 1:26 KJV)
  • And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: (Genesis 3:22 KJV)
  • Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (Matthew 28:19 KJV)

Jesus called him the comforter because he knew the disciples as well as we would need him to carry out our mission once the savior left and returned to heaven. Here is what the Bible says about the comforter:

  • But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26 KJV)

Jesus also referred to him as the Spirit of Truth:

  • But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: (John 15:26 KJV)

From what we have seen so far, we can ascertain the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost in the KJV) is the following:

  • A person
  • The third member of the godhead
  • The comforter that would come to Earth when Jesus left
  • Spirit of Truth
